Next up for the Hollywood Bowl is the complete renovation of the Box Office Plaza. During the off-season the Box Office Plaza will be remodeled to include a new marketplace and expanded picnic area, an updated Hollywood Bowl store and a modernized Box Office (I hope they fix they window speakers … lol). It is nice to see that each year they do major upkeep on the property.
Here is the before photo. Looking forward to the post renovation photo!
Save the dates for the 39th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival, June 10 & 11, 2017. Priority order forms for box and bench seats will be sent in early January. The all-star line-up will be announced in March! Official Hollywood bowl link for the Playboy Jazz Festival.
It is that time of year. Right before the Thanksgiving holiday, Hollywood Bowl renewals for the 2017 season start today. Renewing early does provide some good benefits. First you get your name on the upgrade list for better seats. Second you get to purchase tickets now for “subscriber add-on” concerts.
Opening Night with Fireworks
Sing-A-Ling Sound of Music
July 4th Fireworks Spectacular with Pentatonix (July 2, 3 and 4)
Smooth Summer Jazz
The LA Phil also upgraded the My Account web portal. It is much cleaner and easier to use than the old site. A welcome upgrade.
Ticket prices for the Hollywood Bowl are on the rise for the 2017 season. The LA Country Board of Supervisors cited increased production costs such as marketing, labor and talent fees.
Most seats will increase $1 to $2. Even with the 2017 bump 40% of tickets sold will still be $29 or less for weekday performances and $35 or less for weekend concerts. As with the price increase in 2016 the most affected are the Hollywood Bowl Box and Pool circle seats. The best seats in the house will increase by up to $7 for Saturday performances and $10 for special events. This means that the best seats at the Hollywood Bowl for a Saturday performance will be $196 ($340 for special events).
Parking costs will not change.
The Hollywood Bowl has updated their mobile apps this week. If you already have the Hollywood Bowl mobile app installed on your device the new and improved version will not be automatically installed. Instead you must go either to the Apple Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and explicitly download this updated version. Don’t forget to delete the older version from you mobile device.
The new app has a more modern look and feel as well as expanded functionality.
You can find the new mobile app here.
Depending on the configuration of the Pool Circle there can be up to 105 six-person boxes (here is a Hollywood Bowl 6-person box list) at the Hollywood Bowl. Every year for a few performances (like the July 4th Spectacular) six of us gather in one of these oversized boxes. In the past it has been a bit of a challenge to dine because in addition to the two side tables normally found in the 4-person box, a third table was added in the center. This third table always had to balance the step down inside the box usually with the help of a few bricks. The table was too low for one person and too high for the other.
With the updated seating came an upgrade for the extra table. A hidden flange has been added to the concrete floor of the 6-person box. The table is now more stable and easier to eat at for the two folks in the middle. Well done Hollywood Bowl!
The Hollywood Bowl Box Office officially opens for the 2016 season on Sunday, May 1st. While lots of ticket sales happens on-line, it is a tradition for some to camp out at the box office to be first at the window.
Over the past few years the Hollywood Bowl Box Office has implemented more modern line waiting techniques like using wristbands. The first 300 wristbands are actually drawn randomly by folks waiting in line.
Here is the official wristband policy. If you are going to the Hollywood Bowl Box Office on Sunday (they ask no earlier than 6am) have a great time and good luck!
The countdown to the 2016 Hollywood Bowl season continues. Your chance to purchase better seats is also reaching an end. Now you can choose 3 or more concerts and pick your seats before single concert tickets go on sale. Starting Sunday, May 1st single tickets are available to the general public either on-line or in-person at the Hollywood Bowl Box Office.
The Hollywood Bowl announced a new food and wine program created by Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne (of local restaurants Lucques, a.o.c., Tavern, and The Larder). Some changes from last year are:
- The Rooftop Grill is now Backyard at the Bowl offering full sit down service, wood burning grill and a raw bar.
- Staccato is now Kitchen 22 a roadside burger stand.
- New Street Food Kiosks around the Bowl will feature Banh Mi, Street Tacos, BBQ, Pizza and a Sweets Shop.
- The Marketplace remains and is joined by Buzz McCoy’s Marketplace. Both will offer curated picnic boxes as well as grab and go food.
There are 14 picnic areas as well as a new menu for dining at your seats. Looking forward to the updated fare! Visit the official Hollywood Bowl Food and Wine page for the latest.
Love the Hollywood Bowl? Now own a little piece of the Hollywood Bowl for yourself. When the Hollywood Bowl replaced all of the bench seats a few years back, HB Artisan reclaimed the Alaskan yellow cedar and is now creating some amazing pieces. Some are as small as a flower box while some are as large as a dining room table. The pieces are smooth to the touch and finished with a furniture wax. Just a great way to stay connected to Southern California’s favorite amphitheater.
From the HB Artisan web site:
We are making unique home furnishings crafted from the reclaimed Hollywood Bowl bench seats. This old-growth Alaskan yellow cedar exudes beauty and is a joy to work with. Having baked in the Southern California sunshine for more than forty years, the patina on this wood is a warm grey with hints of brown. We love that this lumber originated in Alaska, was crafted into seating at one of LA’s favorite venues and is now beginning a new life as furniture in the homes of Angelenos. The steel legs on some of our pieces are also hand-forged in Los Angeles.
